The numerous regional DEC’s provide business leadership and international expertise to support the U.S. Commercial Service by offering advice on private sector export matters, promoting and sponsoring export-related seminars, counseling businesses on export-related topics, and lobbying the U.S. Congress and other legislative bodies in support of export initiatives.

The purpose of the DEC National Steering Committee is to facilitate dialogue and communication between all the regional DECs around the U.S. and the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Steering Committee was created to provide a unifying voice for all DECs and a forum by which they may give input to the U.S. Department of Commerce. This committee also helps plan future conferences.

New ideas and initiatives that work well for a DEC are shared with other DECs either on a regional basis or through the National Steering Committee, to ensure effective communication among the DECs.

Through the combined efforts of all DEC members, the nationwide network of DEC's significantly contributes to U.S exports and national economic security.
